Meet YouthINKon18th Reporter: Rudy Ramos

My name is Rodolfo, and I know very little about Pilsen , since I’m not from this neighborhood. For all I knew about Pilsen was that it’s 18th street  and it’s mostly a Hispanic community. Also that it is regularly criticized for its gang violence.  But when I arrived here , for my first day in participating at Radio Arte, I’ve noticed it’s a community that it’s very colorful because of its murals it has. So I inferred that it’s a community filled with a lot of Hispanic culture. Well, during my time in Radio Arte I will like to learn what the residents of Pilsen think of their community. In order to find out, I guess I’ll have to interview the locals myself ,along with other Radio Arte participants, just to receive an answer.

Meet YouthINKon18th Reporter: Andy Ramirez

I’ve lived in Pilsen my whole life. Pilsen was known as a bad area once, but redeemed itself one of the well known places in Chicago. My name is Andy Ramirez. I’m 16 years old and I’m a Reporter at Radio Arte. This is my second time here in the program. I worked last summer when the program first started. We became close and learned to work with each other. Now I’m back again and there are many new faces here in Pilsen. Pilsen is know for it’s Art,Media,Music, and festivities. For we are now rising to better heights. People in Pilsen have a voice and are trying to be heard whether it be for a new clothing line,an art exhibit coming up, a way to help better our environment, a music festival going on and needs help, etc. I feel that a goal here is to show what are youth is capable of doing, instead of known for doing wrong in the neighborhood. We can make better changes.

Meet YouthINKon18th Reporter: Julius Sanchez

Pilsen…I have heard so many bad things about this community. But after interviewing people, and eating their food I would strongly disagree on others opinions. I love the art on the buildings, and the “ Mexican Museum of Art” which is the biggest museum of Mexican art in the nation! The only downside I have of this community is the gangs, and the foul smell from the alleys. But I would still want to explore and learn more of how this community works.

Meet YouthINKon18th Reporter: Dominique Jackson

My actual first time here about two years ago, the first impression was colorful. It was crowded and artistic. Now the only difference is some trash here and there. I learned that the people do not want to be dull but expressive. Everyone seems together and I wonder how they stick together through thick and thin. I will observe them to see what I can learn. Then I might go around and ask them about it

Meet YouthINKon18th Reporter: Cindy Dirzo

Hi my name is Cindy Dirzo. I am sort of familiar with Pilsen I am currently attending Benito Juarez Community Academy. I just barely transfer last summer from Little Village Lawndale. I also join the tennis team so we are constantly practicing on Harrison Park in the beginning of the fall and during the summer. What caught my attention was the street sign Los Tigres del Norte because it represents a part of Pilsen culture in music. What I will like to find out about Pilsen is what the community is like for e.g schools, stores, local celebs, murals and restaurants.
